Kraken is an EU-based platform that has evolved with swaps and a friendlier interface. Kraken is widely accessible, though it has a very small AVAX market. Kraken added AVAX toward the end of 2021 and offers C-Chain tokens.

The chief risk when buying AVAX is to check which type of asset is on sale. If buying C-Chain AVAX, the most common type needed for play-to-earn.
If buying any other type of AVAX, it needs to be sent only to an Avalanche wallet address, then converted to the right chain. Most exchanges trade in C-Chain AVAX, but some may send out X-Chain tokens, which need to be converted.
Essential wallets for AVAX include MetaMask and Avalanche wallet. Both are browser extension type wallets. MetaMask only holds C-Chain AVAX when configured manually to this network. The Avalanche wallet is needed for staking, validation and for using X-Chain for trading.
